弦樂音準 Intonation for String students

弦樂對一般學生而言,音準最難解決的問題,所以我現在練習時,最先專注的便是音準。節奏或其他技巧問題可以稍後處理,畢竟同一時間未必能兼顧太多事項,而音準若練習錯誤,耳朵會逐漸習慣錯誤的聲音,甚至把錯音聽成正確。相比之下,節奏與其他技術問題對一般學生而言反而較容易修正。

因此,在教學上,我也時常提醒自己必須將音準放在首位。若學生在初學階段能多聽到正確的音高,音準自然更容易建立得穩固。

以下列出一些改善音準的方法:

1. 確保每次定弦都調得準確。(雖然看似基本,但確實有學生會把定弦調準)

2. 多使用調音器練習;若音不準,可由上一個音重新練起,細心聽清音與音之間的距離。

3. 多練習音階,並在練習時把音名讀出,以加強音名與指位之間的連結。

4. 多唱歌。

5. 使用手機應用程式進行音程辨識、視唱及聽力訓練。

絕對音感對學習弦樂確實有一定幫助,但一般人多為相對音感;只要經過系統訓練,相對音感同樣能顯著進步。尤其作為老師,我認為相對音感反而更能理解學生在音高上的困難。當然,若具備絕對音感的老師願意用心研究教學方法,也完全能夠有效地引導學生成長。

For most string students, intonation is one of the most difficult challenges to overcome. That is why, in my own practice, I now focus on intonation first. Rhythm and other technical issues can be fixed later, as it is hard to manage too many things at the same time. If intonation is practised incorrectly, the ear gradually becomes used to the wrong sound and may even perceive it as correct. In comparison, rhythm and other technical problems are generally easier for students to correct.

Therefore, in my teaching, I always remind myself to put intonation as the top priority. If students hear more accurate pitches in their early learning stages, their intonation can be built much more solidly.

Below are some methods for improving intonation:

1. Make sure the instrument is tuned accurately every time. (It may sound basic, but some students really do tune incorrectly! 

2. Practise with a tuner often. If a note is out of tune, go back to the previous note and practise again, listening carefully to the interval between them.

3. Practise scales, and speak the note names while playing to strengthen the connection between pitch names and finger positions.

4. Sing more.

5. Use mobile apps to train interval recognition, sight-singing, and ear training.

Perfect pitch can indeed be helpful for learning a string instrument, but most people have relative pitch. With proper training, relative pitch can also improve significantly. As a teacher, I even find that having relative pitch helps me better.
